Simone Biles is celebrating her pal and fellow USA gymnastics competitor, Jade Carey, who just took home a gold medal in today’s Floor Final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Last Tuesday, Biles withdrew from the women's team gymnastics final at the Tokyo Olympics after a difficult turn on the vault. USA Gymnastics released a statement on Wednesday revealing that Biles would not compete in the all-around portion of the events.
“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health,” part of the statement read. “We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”
She then sat out several individual events, including the fan-favorite floor routine. In her absence, the U.S. tapped another top-ranked competitor for the all-around event, Jade Carey. Carey, who was always set to compete in today’s floor event, scored a gold medal during Monday’s women's floor final. (The Arizona native earned a whopping score of 14.366.)
