Salma Hayek Almost Nabbed the Role of Trinity in ‘The Matrix,’ But One Thing Held Her Back

It turns out that one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time, The Matrix, almost featured the one and only Salma Hayek.

That's right, the Frida actress was *very* close to starring as computer hacker Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss) in the turn-of-the-century classic. Hayek revealed that she was one of the finalists during an interview on Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk video series. Meanwhile, Smith revealed she was also one of the four women who was considered for the role, which would end up going to Carrie-Anne Moss.

“We’d jumped through many hurdles, screen testing and many auditions,” Hayek explained. “They brought these stunt coordinators from Asia. It was the physical test. I’m flexible and agile, but I’m lazy.”

She added, “I never really went to the gym. They said, ‘You have to run!’ I go, ‘To where?’ I couldn’t even go around the room once. They never called me again after that day.”

Smith revealed that she was also one of the four women who was considered for the role. According to Hayek, Smith had a much more successful physical test. “Oh my God! She was so good! It was so embarrassing! She was so fit, she was so focused, she was so disciplined. She was so capable. She was so gracious. And I just looked at this woman, and I thought to myself, ‘That’s who I want to be when I grow up.’”

Despite losing the role, Smith thought Moss was the perfect fit, to which the rest of the group agreed. Meanwhile, Hayek joked that she still thinks back to Smith's audition whenever she tries out for an action movie. She said, “Every time I’m going to do action, I say, ‘I better start getting some stamina, and I better start practicing the routines. You’ve got to be like Jada!’”

One question remains: did Smith inspire Hayek's performance in Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard?
