Prince William Just Got Real About Mental Health

Today, Prince William, Prince Harry and Kate Middleton’s Heads Together mental health initiative is celebrated. But that wasn’t always the case.

The 36-year-old Duke of Cambridge discussed the difficulty the threesome experienced when trying to get the project off the ground because of the stigma that surrounds mental health.

“What was very interesting from when we set up the campaign was that not one celebrity wanted to join us,” he explained during a panel at the World Economic forum in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday. “Not one person wanted to be involved in the mental health campaign Heads Together.”

Thanks to their dedication, however, the prince said eventually “some very brave people came forward, from celebrities and from normal people who decided this was really important, and they bravely took on the task of speaking out about mental health.” Chief among them was Lady Gaga, who opened up about her mental health struggles alongside Prince William in an emotional video.

Prince William also took the opportunity to call upon his experience as an air ambulance pilot, saying, “I get very emotional about it because it relates very closely to my children, and so it is very hard to talk about it.”Although he didn’t explain specifically how his children tie in, we do know they were born around the time he was in active service.

William continued to reflect on the emotional pain his experience brought, saying, “I just felt that the most important thing was understanding and realizing it was there…I might’ve gone into my shell a bit and gone, ‘I can deal with this myself,’ and then potentially, down the line, it manifests itself in a much worse situation. So I very much thought that this was an important thing.”

We definitely agree, William.
