Prince William Makes *Major* Announcement—and Now We're 'Saving the Date' for October 17

Just two days after Prince William teased a major announcement on Instagram, he kept his promise and is giving us more information.

On Wednesday, the Duke of Cambridge shared a video on the Kensington Palace Instagram page featuring himself looking out into the distance as he controls a drone hovering in the sky. The clip was shared to tease his current Earthshot prize endeavor. “@earthshotprize news coming later this week…” he captioned the post.

As a follow-up, the 39-year-old royal revealed the date for the Awards in a separate Instagram post on Friday. “Where we’ll unveil five global prize winners and their game-changing solutions to repair our planet,” William said in the video clip. “October 17th in London.”

If you’re unfamiliar, the duke’s Earthshot Prize offers $65 million to provide “solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems” over the next decade. The initiative (which we first learned about in 2020) is the result of two years of work by the royal and The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The mission? Reward those who are making a difference in climate change.

Per the official website, the show will be broadcast to a global audience and will celebrate the global finalists before awarding the first five winners of the Earthshot Prize. These top five solutions will have the greatest impact on the biggest environmental challenges facing our planet and the winners will each receive £1 million to scale their solutions.

No more information has been revealed about the actual ceremony. However, as People points out, with Cate Blanchett and Shakira on the council, it’s likely to be packed with stars.

We’re marking our calendars.
