The First Photos from ‘Little Women’ Are Here! See the March Sisters In All Their Glory

The March sisters are back and they’re more vivid heroines than ever.

The first photos from Greta Gerwig’s new movie iteration of Little Women have arrived and they feature heavy-hitters Meryl Streep (Aunt March) Emma Watson (Meg), Saoirse Ronan (Jo), Laura Dern (Marmee) and Timothée Chalamet (Laurie) in full period piece garb. But it’s not the feminine sunhats and petticoats that transport us to another time—it’s all the little details that make us that much more excited to see the film in theaters.

Photos arrived via Vanity Fair today in conjunction with an interview with the 35-year-old writer/director, which sheds light on how committed the film is to capturing the essence of author Louisa May Alcott’s world.

Take, for instance, the first photo in the slideshow above. The mis-en-scene and costumes were mirrored after an 1870 painting by Winslow Homer called High Tide. As Gerwig told Vanity Fair, “It gives gravity to what you’re doing. The physical place really reminds you of the story you’re trying to tell.”

The next photo shows Jo and Laurie sharing a moment. Gerwig explained that she saw the characters as each other’s twins and often had them swap clothing throughout the movie to make them even more connected.

The third photo in the series shows Meg working as a governess to earn a little money. As the oldest, Meg is the only sister who remembers when her family was well off and truly misses it.

But she’s not alone in this memory, Marmee recalls easier living, too, and it shows on her face in the fourth photo.

Then, last but not least, we see Gerwig directing Streep as Aunt March. Similar to Streep’s Big Little Lies character, Aunt March disapproves of the March girls’ upbringing and takes it upon herself to make them more industrious. She does this mostly by employing Jo (named after Josephine) as her companion.

In addition to the aforementioned cast members, Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family) plays Amy and Eliza Scalen (Sharp Objects) plays Beth.

Little Women hits theaters December 25, 2019. We know what we’re doing this holiday season…
