Jane the Virgin is getting a fresh start.
Although the show is ending after its fifth season this year, a spin-off is officially in the works. Gina Rodriguez (Jane) announced the news with a somewhat confusing pic of herself posing with her TV son, Mateo (Elias Janssen).
She captioned the photo, “We got some good news from the CW! Jane will be birthing a SPIN OFF!!!!! Jane the Novelas!!!”
So, what’s confusing about that? Well, Rodriguez is clearly pregnant in the photo, but her on-screen son is beside her. That could mean she gets pregnant again (Dios mio!) or the show could flashback to her pregnancy with Mateo. Another thought: She could have thrown on the belly purely for the sake of a well-placed pun.
The spin-off will reportedly be an anthology series that hinges on books written by Jane, who’s an aspiring author in the OG show. The first installment is called Tar & Roses and explores wine country in Napa Valley and the San Francisco art scene. Jane alums writer Valentina Garza and director Brad Silberling will helm the offshoot.
Jane the Virgin returns for its final season on March 27. At least we’ll have that to tide us over until the Novelas drop.
