We’re Getting a New ‘Harry Potter’ TV Show, According to Reports

Pack your bags, because it looks like we are heading back to Hogwarts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new, live-action series based on J.K. Rowling’s popular novels is in “early development” at HBO Max. Sources recently told the outlet that company executives “have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television.”

That said, apparently Warner Bros. is denying the reports at the moment. Though Variety separately confirmed the project through its own sources, a statement from WB to them read, “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.” Hmm…

We’re not completely surprised to hear that the Harry Potter world is expanding. The popular books, which follow our favorite wizards, Harry, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, inspired eight films that grossed an impressive $7 billion and have continued to grow in popularity throughout the years.

Rumors of more HP movies or TV shows have been swirling for some time now. In fact, in 2018, Daniel Radcliffe even predicted other versions in the future.

“I’m sure there will be some other version of it; I know I’m not the last Harry Potter I’m gonna see in my lifetime—we’ve already got a few more,” Radcliffe said during an interview with IGN. “It will be interesting to see how long those films stay. It feels like there’s a sacredness around them at the moment. But that’ll go, the shine will wear off at some point.”

He continued, “It’ll be interesting if they reboot them and just do the films again or do a series; I’m fascinated to watch.”

While the news is definitely exciting, the project seems to be in the very preliminary stages with no details on any potential writers or talent. (Rowling recently came under fire for making transphobic remarks, so it's entirely possible she will not be involved with the new project.)
