Did the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Finale Tease a Future Return by Cristina Yang?

We have several burning questions after watching last night’s season 17 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, but the biggest one of all is whether or not the ending foreshadowed a future cameo by Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh).

To start, let’s talk about the episode, titled “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” because there’s a lot to unpack. Unlike previous installments, it takes place over the course of eight months and highlights several major milestones through flashbacks and flashforwards.

Here’s what you need to know: Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) adopts her patient, Luna. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) postpones her wedding and then ties the knot with Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill). Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) proposes to Teddy (Kim Raver). Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) doubts her relationship with Link (Chris Carmack), who pops the question later on. (We don’t know her answer, but it doesn’t look promising.)

The finale concludes with a scene that delighted Cristina Yang fans. After Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) successfully completes a transplant on Cristina’s patient, she texts her BFF with an update. Cristina responds, “Donor lungs available, booking the O.R. for tonight.”

Meredith quips, “Don’t forget who did it first.” To which Cristina replies with laughing emojis.

So, what does the text cameo mean? We’re not entirely sure, since the episode left us with more questions than answers. But if we had to guess, we’d say that Grey’s Anatomy is preparing fans for a much-needed Cristina Yang return.

We don’t want you to get your hopes up, because we expect the reappearance to be extremely brief. It’s all because Oh previously spoke out about the possibility of returning for Grey’s Anatomy season 18. She wasn’t in favor of reprising her character, claiming she has “moved on.” However, she did mention that while she’s no longer attached to Cristina Yang, she’s well aware of the hype around a surprise cameo.

“I left that show, my God, seven years ago almost,” Oh told The Los Angeles Times. “So, in my mind, it’s gone. But for a lot of people, it’s still very much alive.”

We’re not saying Oh will suddenly become a series regular again. But even if she’s moved on from her days at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, there’s no harm in pleasing the fans, even if it’s just a brief FaceTime call with Meredith.

Guess we’ll have to wait ‘til season 18 to find out for sure.
