‘The Help’ Is Trending on Netflix, But Star Bryce Dallas Howard Is Offering Up 9 Better Movies & TV Shows to Watch Instead

The hashtag #TheHelp recently started trending on Twitter in the wake of protests across the country supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. However, Bryce Dallas Howard’s reaction isn’t what we expected.

Over the weekend, the 39-year-old actress caught wind of The Help’s renewed popularity. (The movie reached the number one spot on Netflix’s most-watched charts but has since dropped to fourth place.)

Howard—who played Hilly Holbrook in The Help—addressed the situation on Instagram, reminding viewers that the movie is not only told from the perspective of a Caucasian woman, but it’s also created by “predominantly White storytellers.” She then provided a list of alternative movie and TV show options, including 13th, Selma and When They See Us.

She captioned the post, “I’ve heard that #TheHelp is the most viewed film on @netflix right now! I’m so grateful for the exquisite friendships that came from that film—our bond is something I treasure deeply and will last a lifetime. This being said, The Help is a fictional story told through the perspective of a white character and was created by predominantly white storytellers. We can all go further.”

Howard provided other recommendations, writing, “Here are a handful of powerful, essential, masterful films and shows that center Black lives, stories, creators, and / or performers.”

  1. 13th
  2. Eyes on the Prize
  3. I am Not Your Negro
  4. Just Mercy
  5. Malcom X
  6. Say Her Name: The Life and Death Of Sandra Bland
  7. Selma
  8. Watchmen
  9. When They See Us

Let the viewing marathon commence.
