It's destined to be *the* music-based biopic of summer: Rocketman, which tells the story of Elton John’s breakthrough years as a performer, is set to hit theaters on May 31.
But stepping into the shoes of the music legend is no small job. Still, actress Bryce Dallas Howard—who plays Elton’s mom in the film—is the first to admit: The lead role, played by Taron Egerton, couldn’t have been more perfectly cast.
“With Taron, Elton literally was like: ‘YOU. You are going to play me.’ What other vote of confidence do you need?” she told PureWow at an event for Tide Purclean, the first plant-based detergent made using 100 percent wind-generated electricity.
And how did the aspiring Rocketman—who, fun fact, sings all the songs himself—do? According to Howard, quite well. “Taron did more than transform into Elton, he inhabited him,” she explains. “It certainly wasn’t an impersonation, but his heart. It was a shape-shifting thing where Taron gave one of those performances where I was like, ‘OMG, I got to see that live.’ It’s incredible.”
