Ashley Graham’s CFDA Awards Look Was a Retro Nod to This Iconic Designer

The CFDA Awards (that's short for Council of Fashion Designers of America, for the uninitiated) are kind of like the Oscars for American fashion. So naturally, you would expect every designer, model and celeb to Show Up for the annual event.

And that's exactly what they did for Monday night’s ceremony, held this year in Brooklyn, New York. On the best-dressed list? Ashley Graham, who wore a Christian Siriano design and gave off all the retro vibes.

The 31-year-old model and host of American Beauty Star exuded old Hollywood glam in the curve-hugging midi dress, which was complete with gigantically puffy sleeves and matching full-length gloves. She accessorized with an oversize black hat, see-through pointed-toe heels and plenty of diamonds. The overall getup could easily be described as unapologetic diva.

Graham said of the look: "[F]eeling like I just walked out of a fabulous Alfred Hitchcock film, darling!" and we think she’s spot on. The dress is also reminiscent of Christian Dior’s iconic “New Look” designs of the 1940s, which were intended to emphasize a woman's hourglass curves. We can only assume it’s an industry nod from Siriano, who became a CFDA member in 2013.

Graham and Siriano, 33, walked the red carpet together before presenting scholarships and post-grad opportunities for the next generation of designers at the award ceremony. And Siriano posted not one, but four Instagrams documenting his stunning work. “She showed up to the Funeral to COLLECT THE CHECK!” he captioned one post. Accurate.
