How to Baste Food Without a Basting Brush

The grilling trick you need to know

Corn? Check. Marinade? Check. Steaks? Check. Basting brush to slather said marinade on steak? Oh, crap. Luckily, you can get by without one.

What you need: Corn cobs and a rubber band.

What you do: Peel the husks off the cobs as you normally would. Only instead of tossing them into the trash, grab a fistful and tie them off with a rubber band. Gently pull apart the loose husks at the opposite end so they’re splayed. There you have it: Nature’s basting brush.

Don’t have corn? You can get a similar effect using the stringy ends of green onions.
