The Best Gluten-Free Goodies in NYC
Lasagna and bagels and crepes, for starters
New York City is home to some of the best restaurants in the universe, so naturally there’s no better place to get gluten-free foods that aren’t a total disappointment.
But exactly where to find those foods? That’s another story.
We scoured the city to find the most delicious gluten-free dishes, whether you’re gluten intolerant or ditched wheat because that ripped trainer at the gym told you it was a good idea.
Now, about that bagel…
PALA PIZZA: BUFALA CRUDA PROSCIUTTO PIE
This cozy Lower East Side joint has 20 gluten-free pizzas, four of which are also vegan. Our favorite pie is topped with Buffalo mozzarella, cherry-tomato sauce, prosciutto and fresh basil.
198 Allen St. (between E. Houston and Stanton sts.); 212-614-7252 or palapizza.com
EIGHT TURN CREPE: TWINKLEBERRY PARFAIT
Crepes are totally off-limits, right? Wrong. This Nolita creperie uses 100 percent rice flour, so you can eat its delicious berry-and-custard confection for dessert. Or even breakfast--we won’t judge.
55 Spring St. (between Lafayette and Mulberry sts.); 212-334-3408 or eightturncrepe.com
S’MAC: ALL-AMERICAN MAC AND CHEESE
Chefs Sarita and Caesar Ekya have the g-free mac-and-cheese game down. The traditional recipe includes a gooey combo of American and cheddar, but they also serve it up Cajun-, Buffalo-chicken- and masala-style.
Murray Hill and East Village locations; 212-683-3900 or smacnyc.com
BY THE WAY BAKERY: ALMOND COOKIE
For a treat that’s surprisingly soft and light, look no further than By the Way Bakery’s almond cookie. There’s a reason these delicious little guys are the specialty.
2442 Broadway (between 90th and 91st sts.); 212-877-0806 or btwbakery.com
MELT SHOP: TRUFFLE MELT
Gluten-free bread is available on any of its sandwiches, but we’re partial to the Havarti, truffle oil and arugula beauty above.
Locations in the Financial District, Flatiron, Midtown West and Hell’s Kitchen; 646-741-7910 or meltshop.com
SENZA GLUTEN: LASAGNA WITH BEEF BOLOGNESE
Everything on the menu at this Greenwich Village Italian restaurant is gluten-free, including the decadent lasagna, which features heavenly layers of pasta, Bolognese sauce and cheese.

JENNIFER’S WAY BAKERY: CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE
No more gazing longingly at the dessert counter. Every item at this bakery isn’t just gluten-free; it’s also free of dairy, soy, refined sugar and peanuts. Somehow the chocolate cupcakes are still magically moist and sweet--so order two and don’t feel bad about it.
