‘The Hunger Games’ Prequel Movie Teaser Has Finally Been Released—and It’s Jam-Packed with Symbolism

Let the Hunger Games begin…once again!

The first official teaser for the highly anticipated The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has finally been released. The one-minute teaser starts in a cold-winter forest, where tree branches are fully encased in snow. Next, the ice begins to slowly thaw, revealing a golden songbird and snake underneath.

During the sequence, there is bold black text that flashes across the screen, reading, “You’re invited to return to the game in 2023. The world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.” The teaser ends with the songbird freed from the wintery ice and the confirmed release date: November 17, 2023.

The prequel will follow a young Coriolanus Snow, years before he becomes the President of Panem. Last month, it was confirmed that Billy the Kid star Tom Blyth will play the pre-villainous character in the upcoming movie.

Francis Lawrence, who directed the last three films in The Hunger Games franchise, is confirmed to direct the prequel. He recently told People how Blyth was just the right person for the role of Snow. “Tom’s take on the character showed us all the complex ambiguities of this young man as he transforms into the tyrant he would become.”

Just last week, Deadline reported West Side Story actress Rachel Zegler will play the role of Lucy Gray Baird—a young tribute who is chosen for the 10th annual Hunger Games, with Snow as her mentor.

Oh, we’ll definitely be watching.
