Garner plays Riley North, a woman who lost her husband and daughter in a senseless act of violence and, five years later, seeks revenge on the people responsible and the system that let them go free. But she wasn’t always a lethal assassin. In fact, part of the film consists of flashbacks to five years earlier, when she was just a simple working-class mom employed as a bank teller.
Unfortunately, the screenplay fails to provide any details as to exactly how North becomes an expert in hand-to-hand combat and automatic weaponry (we’re still reeling about this). But, nevertheless she does and the rest of the story is history.
Perhaps the best part of the vigilante film is its ability to exploit one of Garner’s defining skill sets that have long been forgotten—her ability to play a kick-ass action role. Who can forget her beloved hit Alias and her not-so-popular Elektra?
The action thriller film was directed by Pierre Morel, written by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen) and the star-studded cast also includes John Ortiz (Ad Astra), John Gallagher Jr. (Hush), Juan Pablo Raba (Narcos) and Tyson Ritter (Preacher).
We’ll take any excuse to watch Garner kick some bad-guy butt.
