Gellar wrote a heartfelt caption that read, “25 years ago today I had the honor to introduce the world to my version of Buffy Anne Summers. It was an uphill battle. A midseason replacement, on a new network based on a movie, that was by no means a giant success.”
She continued, “But then there was you. The fans. You believed in us. You made this happen. You are the reason 25 years later we are still celebrating. So today we celebrate you as well. #wwbd.”
Other cast members took the time to pay homage to the show on social media. For instance, David Boreanaz, who played Angel (AKA Buffy’s love interest), posted a throwback photo of himself, writing, “An Angel was born 25 years ago even though he was 245 years old. We celebrate 25 years and to all the fans we say ‘Thank You!’”
The Scooby-Doo alum responded in the comments section, “My angel—then and now.”
Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on The WB in 1997. The show spanned for seven seasons, coming to an end in 2003 on UPN. The story follows a teenage girl named Buffy (Gellar), who is chosen to be a “Vampire Slayer.” By day, she is a normal high school student. But by night, she fights against vampires, demons and other forms of darkness.
Yup, we definitely feel old now.
