It’s pretty much impossible for us to imagine the movie Titanic without Kate and Leo, but the rest of the cast is pretty solidly set in our minds as well. Kathy Bates, for instance, will forever be the one and only “Unsinkable Molly Brown,” but as it turns out that almost wasn’t the case. It recently came to light that Reba McEntire was originally offered the role of the outspoken American philanthropist. Well, I’ll be.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen, McEntire revealed that she was the OG Molly Brown but ended up having to turn down the role due to scheduling conflicts.
“[My band and I] were on tour, and I had a lot of people on the payroll. We had these three months already scheduled to do the movie, and then they got behind on scheduling and said, ‘No, we’re going to have to move it in this time,’ so we couldn’t reschedule all the arenas and everything,” explained McEntire.
When Cohen asked whether or not she was affected when the movie turned out to be such a huge hit, Reba was as honest of ever: “Well, sure! Absolutely!
“But you’ve got to take care of your people,” she added. How noble of you, Reba. And how lucky for Kathy Bates (and us) that the shooting dates moved or we might never have had the Molly Brown we all fell in love with.
