New Pop Star Drama Based on Mandy Moore’s Music Career Is Coming to ABC

Mandy Moore is making a music comeback in more ways than one. The 35-year-old actress has a new drama in the works, inspired by her early music career.

ABC has bought a pilot from the A Walk to Remember star titled 90’s Popstar, which follows a small-town Florida family as they try to adapt when their daughter goes from regular teen to worldwide superstar practically overnight.

The project hails from writer and executive producer Amanda Lasher, with Moore set to executive produce alongside This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. No word if Moore will star yet (we’ll keep our fingers crossed), since she is still currently a series regular in the Emmy-nominated series This Is Us.

If you didn’t know, Moore’s music career took off in the 1990s when she released her hit pop single “Candy,” followed by her first studio album So Real.  She went on to release five more albums like I Wanna Be with YouMandy Moore and Coverage.

The news comes not long after Moore made her big return to music. After a ten-year hiatus, she released her single “When I Wasn’t Watching” last month. (She also dropped an accompanying music video). This is her first single since “I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week,” off of her sixth album, Amanda Leigh, back in June 2009.

And that’s not all: A brand-new album is on the way and is set to be released on Verve Forecast early next year.

So while we don’t know too much about the new series, we can only hope that it features new music from the singer-songwriter.

Timing is everything, right?
