Royal Baby Alert! The Heir to the Luxembourg Throne Welcomes a Son—and His Name Is Prince Charles

Royal baby news is always a bright spot in our week, but especially during a pandemic. That’s why we were thrilled to learn the heir to the Luxembourg throne, Prince Guillaume, and his wife, Princess Stephanie, are officially parents after welcoming their first child last weekend—a boy!

His name? It’s Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume, which means that we’ve officially got another Prince Charles roaming the planet. (Big shoes!)

In terms of Luxembourg’s line of succession, Prince Charles is second in line to the throne. He first met his grandparents—the Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa—via video chat, given the COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing orders currently in place.

The Grand Duke and Duchess shared photos on Instagram to mark the occasion. They also included this caption, translated from French: “Time stood still at Berg Castle during a video call during which the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess had the immense joy of meeting their grandson Prince Charles for the first time. A digital meeting, certainly, but charged with emotion!”

Prince Guillaume shared his own message outside Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg where his son was born.

“A birth is a message of hope,” he said. “It’s a blessing. I think this is what we’re so happy to be able to share with Luxembourg, but also over the borders with all the different countries.”

No truer words. Also, proof baby news—in particular, the royal kind—transcends all else. (Now, if only there was a way to arrange for the OG Prince Charles to Zoom with the new Prince Charles...)
