Hilary Swank Reveals the Touching Reason She Took a 3-Year Acting Hiatus

Hilary Swank has been noticeably absent from Hollywood for the past three years, and it turns out there’s an emotional reason: She’s been caring for her ailing father, Stephen Swank.

The Oscar winner stopped by The Late Show and updated host Stephen Colbert on her dad’s health following his lifesaving lung transplant.

She explained that her father received a poor prognosis after learning he needed a lung transplant in 2015 and was given only “a short time to live.” So at the height of her career, Swank opted to step back and become her father’s personal nurse. Now, Swank says, “he’s alive and thriving and well. I took three years off to be with him and help him through that life journey.”

She continued, “It’s the hardest surgery a person can undergo, and I thank all the people who make themselves a donor. It saves lives.”

Swank is now returning to acting with an exciting role. She stars in the new FX series Trust from director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). The story centers on the kidnapping of J. Paul Getty III and features Swank as his mom, Gail. The series airs March 25.

That does it: Hilary Swank is officially daughter of the year past three years.
