Watch Hilary Duff in New ‘The Haunting of Sharon Tate’ Trailer

Hilary Duff’s new role is a far cry from her Lizzy McGuire days.

The 31-year-old new mom stars as the titular character in the upcoming horror film The Haunting of Sharon Tate and the trailer is…something.

Based on the real-life gruesome 1969 murders of Tate, her unborn baby, her ex-boyfriend-turned-friend Jay Sebring, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski and Steven Parent, the film reimagines the well-known story with a premonition component. In The Haunting of Sharon Tate, the late actress dreams of ghosts haunting her home and foresees being murdered by a satanic cult (which is basically what happened).

Tate was eight and a half months pregnant on the night of the murders and had asked her friends to stay with her while her husband, director Roman Polanski, was away on business. At the behest of cult leader Charles Manson, Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Linda Kasabian drove to Tate’s home (which formerly belonged to a music producer named Terry Melcher who had upset Manson) and brutally murdered everyone there.

Duff plays the role of Tate in crisis (and she didn’t even have to wear a fake pregnant tummy!). Written and directed by Daniel Farrands (The Amityville Murders), the movie also stars Jonathan Bennett (Mean Girls) as Jay Sebring and Lydia Hearst (Z Nation) as Abigail Folger.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate hits theaters on April 5, just shy of the 50-year anniversary of the murders.

We’d definitely sleep with the lights on, Hilary.
