George & Amal Clooney Fell in Love Thanks to…Animals? Here’s the Story

If George and Amal Clooney have taught us anything about love, it’s that a shared passion (in their case, humanitarian causes) makes a solid bond even stronger—well, that and really, really good looks. But in Vogue’s May cover story, Amal reveals that their relationship really blossomed thanks to animals. Confused? Let’s start from the beginning.

Amal and George met at a dinner party in Lake Como, Italy, in 2013, and there was an immediate spark. When Amal returned home to London, she and George began exchanging emails. Appealing to her witty sense of humor, George wrote his emails from the perspective of his dog, Einstein, who claimed to be trapped in random places and in dire need of Amal’s legal expertise. (Celebs, they’re just as corny as us.)

But wait, there’s more to this tail (sorry, had to). When the couple was on safari in Africa, they came across Amal’s favorite animals—giraffes. As George remembers, “Some giraffes walked up to her. They just came out of the blue. I took a picture of her, and she was smiling. I said to my buddy Ben, ‘You know, I think I should ask her to marry me.’ And Ben said, ‘I think that’s a good idea.’”

The duo doesn’t take the Disney-esque part animals played in their love story for granted. In fact, at their home in Sonning, England, they pay homage to George’s beloved cocker spaniel with a painting of him posing as a professor at a chalkboard and also have a painting of a giraffe’s head. Amal revealed that they tried to get both portraits insured and were met with disdain: “They were like, ‘It’s barely worth getting a policy.’ They were very judgmental.”

Welp, there you have it: George and Amal Clooney’s love story is basically Snow White.
