Flex Your Green Thumb *and* Help the Planet with This Latest Initiative from Air Wick and World Wildlife Fund

Ah, the last few weeks of warm weather. Maybe you can’t wait for the cold or maybe you’re so not ready to say goodbye to the summer season. Either way, if you’re anything like us, you probably want to spend as much time as possible enjoying nature. That could mean eating meals al fresco, relaxing by the closest body of water, or enjoying cocktail hour in your yard, balcony or fire escape. While you’re savoring these moments, we have a suggestion: Plant some wildflowers.

Here’s why: Air Wick has partnered with World Wildlife Fund to give back to nature and reseed one billion square feet of native wildflowers and grasslands in the Northern Great Plains over the next three years. The mission is called One Square Foot and you can join in the good cause yourself—no gardening expertise required. Read on to find out how you too can make a difference in your own community.

So, What Is This Cause Exactly?

Did you know that since 2009 the U.S. has lost 33 million acres (aka half the size of Colorado) of grassland and wildflower habitats in the U.S. Great Plains? Wildflowers aren’t just pretty, they’re actually super important for the ecosystem. They’re vital for wildlife like pollinators and songbirds and their roots improve our soil health and water quality. Air Wick’s fragrances are inspired by and connected to nature, so it’s only natural (pun intended) that they partnered with World Wildlife Fund, whose own purpose is to help people and nature thrive. Together, they’re raising awareness of the need for more wildflower habitats and encouraging others to take action.

And What’s The Action Plan?

The Northern Great Plains spans more than 180 million acres over five states and two Canadian provinces and is one of the world’s only remaining temperate grasslands. It protects clean water and air, stores carbon and provides habitats for numerous species of birds, plants, mammals, fish and more—including bumble bees, one of our most important pollinators. However, row crop agriculture threatens this delicate ecosystem, risking the extinction of animals and the unique climate. Air Wick and WWF are giving back to nature with One Square Foot, a mission that seeks to plant one billion new square feet of wildflowers and grasses in the Northern Great Plains over the next three years to help protect and restore the region. In fact, you can follow along with their progress and see where they’re planting using their online Seed Tracker until 2024.

Sounds Cool—how Can I Help?

All you have to do is plant some wildflowers in your own backyard or in pots on your patio, balcony, windowsill—wherever! Just one square foot can provide food for pollinators like bumble bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Air Wick is making it even easier to participate by offering complimentary seeds native to your region—just sign up to get some shipped right to your door. Then share pics of your garden with the hashtag #PlantWildflowers to show off your amazing work and encourage others to join. Plus, support Air Wick’s journey to becoming a more sustainable brand by purchasing their amazing-smelling products—including the Botanica line of scented oils and room sprays. Naturally inspired, this line has been reformulated to ensure lower environmental impact across both ingredients and packaging to improve recyclability. That means no dyes, phthalates or animal testing. Check out some of our favorite Air Wick products and join the movement below.
