It’s been eight years since Inception melted our brains, and we can still feel the pangs of confusion. Well, thanks to Michael Caine, who played Dom Cobb’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) dad in the Christopher Nolan–directed film, we finally have closure.
The Oscar winner recently spoke on a panel at a Film 4 Summer Screen showing of the movie and revealed a key detail that totally explains the cryptic ending.
“When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it,” Caine admitted, according to Time. “And I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is.’ I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene, it’s reality.’” (Take a moment to process that heady answer.)
Caine went on to clarify, “So get that—if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”
So was he in the final scene where Dom comes home to his children? As watching the clip above will show you, yep, he was totally there.
We love a happy ending.
