Until recently, outdoor furniture was an afterthought, often regarded with a ‘save and store’ mentality (aka save your wallet for something that doesn’t sit in storage half the year). The more unspoken reason, however, was that most outdoor pieces were a) uncomfortable and b) downright ugly. They all seemed to have the same, stiff polyester cushions that mimicked an airplane seat—uninspired metal arms and boring rectangular silhouettes.

And then, COVID-19 hit. Not only were people spending more time outside, but they also started looking for pieces that they could invest in. So, as backyard design started to get as much attention as the kitchen, furniture manufacturers responded with a trend that’s changing the game: outdoor bean bags.

Per a holiday shopping report by Google, bean bags were the top trending item in yard and patio furniture in 2023, and it’s not going anywhere any time soon. After all, who doesn’t want to be comfortable when they’re lounging outside? The latest bean bags combine comfort with style—taking an ultra-cushy feel with a design that can skew modern and Scandinavian or playful and patterned (read: cabana stripes).

To that end, these are nothing like indoor beanbags you’d equate with a playroom or basement. Most have wide, sinkable constructions that make them feel like a floating daybed—all while being built with weatherproof performance fabrics. In fact, many of the beanbags I’m seeing double as pool floats—they’re lightweight enough to carry from the lawn to the water, and you don’t have to worry about replacing them season after season. (Hot tip: If your bean bag gets soaked in a storm, immediately place it in a covered area with open air until the water evaporates. This will help prevent the filling from accumulating mold over time.)

Plus, the more luxurious outdoor bean bag arrivals are designed to work as modular sectionals. From Blomus’ outdoor sofa to a five-seat patio sectional created by European designer David Di Meco, you can re-arrange each piece to work in a conversation set (or remove a chair to use as extra seating when you’re entertaining). They’re flexible, built to hold up against rain and UV rays, and guaranteed to stay squishy season after season.

Looking to hop on the trend? Same. Below, three outdoor beanbags I’m loving for summer 2024.
