Meghan Markle’s Reaction to That Famous Beyoncé and Jay-Z Tribute Is Super Relatable

Meghan Markle was apparently just as surprised as we were to see Beyonce’s tribute to her on national television last year. At least, according to a new biography on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Titled Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Familythe book features never-before-heard stories about the couple, including Markle’s reaction to learning about that very special homage from the music mogul during the 2019 Brit Awards.

ICYMI: The Carters, who received the award on February 20 for Best International Music Group at the ceremony (which is basically the U.K.'s Grammys), accepted their win from afar, and a video of Beyoncé and Jay-Z was played at the event. In it, the music legends are standing in front of an illustrated portrait of Markle, complete with a crown, jewels and a princess gown.

The Carters were recreating a scene from their "Apeshit" music video in which they stand in front of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, but instead of ol' Mona, it's the duchess in fan-art form.

Per the book, the 39-year-old royal was returning to the U.K. from her star-studded baby shower, when her makeup artist and close friend, Daniel Martin, texted her about the news.

“I think all I wrote was 'Girl,'" said Martin, who also sent her the relevant video, according to Town & Country. "She wrote me back, like, the big-eye emoji.” Our sentiments exactly.

Not long after the awards, the “Halo” singer revealed why she and King Jay decided to pay their respects to the duchess at the event.

Posting to her website under the section called "#WeGood," where the star honored black artists, activists and entrepreneurs during February for Black History Month, Beyoncé wrote about the tribute to Markle, stating she is "one of the few Black women to join a royal family" and that even before she married into the royal family, Markle worked with charities and communities of color in Africa and India.

We wonder which emoji Markle used after reading that...
