What to Consider When Shopping for Men’s Body Wash

  • Fragrance: It’s why we're here, right? This honestly boils down to your personal preference. As a dermatologist previously told us, “A scented body wash should make you feel pampered and happy. This is an indulgence for yourself, so you want something that will help you feel your best.” Some people prefer warm scents like vanilla, sandalwood and amber, while others like crisp aromas like eucalyptus, cedar and mint. The important thing is to find one that you enjoy.
  • Ingredients: According to Dr. Garshick, look for formulas that “effectively get rid of dirt, excess oil and sweat without stripping the skin of its natural oils.” Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin. She adds, “These hydrating ingredients can help boost moisture and support the skin barrier overtime.”
  • Skin Concerns: While we love a good scent, Dr. Lancer points out that you should also look into a body wash that targets any skin concerns like irritation, acne and dryness. “You want to make sure the ingredients in the formula are pH balanced, but also free of causing any skin discomfort or irritation,” he says.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Scented Body Washes Actually Help You Smell Better?

While body washes help keep you clean and refreshed, the scent is typically temporary. As Dr. Lancer shares, “Scented body washes offer a temporary odor cover up, but it will not replace proper hygienic routines. I still recommend the use of exfoliating, cleansing and nourishing regularly to keep the skin healthy, odor free, and in its normal PH balanced state.”

The experts also say if you’re struggling specifically with body odor, it might be helpful to chat with a dermatologist, who may prescribe you a stronger option. “It may be helpful to use an antibacterial wash to help get rid of bacteria that may contribute to the odor,” shares Dr. Garshick.

What Are the Best Men’s Body Wash for Body Odor?

Dr. Lancer says key ingredients can clue you into which body washes are designed to tackle body odor. “Body washes that contain hydrating ingredients such as aloe, glycerin and shea butter can help properly cleanse the skin and protect the natural barrier which in turn helps eliminate odor,” he explains. “Other natural ingredients that are helpful include menthol, eucalyptus, or lavender which contain natural deodorizing and antibacterial properties.”

Which Is Best: Body Wash, Shower Gel or Bar Soap?

Believe it or not, there’s no definitive answer to this question. Experts say it all depends on your preference and sometimes even your skin type. “A body wash may be preferred for someone with dry or sensitive skin, while a shower gel may be better suited for someone with more oily skin. When it comes to body soaps, it is important to avoid harsh soaps to avoid drying out the skin and stripping the skin and its natural oils,” says Dr. Garshick. It’s important to remember that not all bars are created equal, and to look for ones that contain gentle surfactants and nourishing ingredients, so the skin won’t feel tight or stripped. Regardless of which type of product is used, the goal is not to feel squeaky clean.”

Can You Really Trust 3-in-1 Body Products?

I was surprised to learn that dermatologists aren’t completely dismissive of the 3-in-1 product. Dr. Garshick explains, “In many cases a 3-in-1 product is better than nothing for someone who otherwise would not be using anything. Though for those with sensitive skin, it’s important to remember that some ingredients used to cleanse the scalp and hair may not be needed for the body. However, 3-in-1 products are typically formulated to be safe for use all over.”

Regardless how you feel about avoiding (or using) these products, our experts want you to continue to take a closer look at the formulas to ensure you can use it everywhere with no irritation or discomfort. “Consumers more than ever are looking for simplified solutions but beware as some products often can’t target specific concerns when they are formulated to cover so many benefits at once. If the skin needs exfoliation or antibacterial solutions for example, it is best to use two different products,” says Dr. Lancer.
