Move Over, Meghan Markle: Sophie, Countess of Wessex Is the Latest Royal to Buck Tradition with Wide-Legged Trousers

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle often get press for their polished (and sometimes protocol-breaking) outfits, but there’s another female royal who’s also been known to work it. No, it’s not Queen Elizabeth or Camilla Parker Bowles, although we do appreciate their respective bold colors and power clashing. We’re, of course, talking about Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The 54-year-old countess, who’s married to Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son Prince Edward, stays relatively under the radar. But every time she steps out for a royal engagement, she looks fantastic. Take today for example.

When attending a thanksgiving service (not that kind of thanksgiving) for the late Sir Donald Gosling, a longtime friend of the royal family, she complimented the rest of the Windsor fam’s navy blue outfits in a truly chic ensemble.

Countess Sophie selected a blue belted coat with flare sleeves and a dark cornflower blue pair of wide-legged trousers. She completed the look with a matching top, hat and clutch and black boots. Generally, the ladies of the royal family opt for dresses at occasions like this, but Sophie isn’t the first to push the envelope and go for trousers instead. The 37-year-old Duchess of Cambridge wore navy slacks this past March and again last December. The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex, of course, has worn trousers many times. But come to think of it, Countess Sophie’s pants most remind of us Queen Máxima of the Netherlands’ oversized slacks.

You heard it here first: trousers on royals are trending upward this year. We’ll have to wait and see about 2020.
