At first glance, the increasing popularity of hashtagging infant pics #rainbowbaby, usually while posting a photo of said baby amid ROY-G-BIV-colored blankets, bath bubbles or flowers, seems like the next eye-roll-inducing trend that’s about to spawn a Starbucks Frappuccino.
But dig deeper and the meaning of the term is as breath-catchingly beautiful as the natural phenomenon that inspired it. “Rainbow baby” is a term used to describe the baby that’s born directly after a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death; aka an awe-inspiring event that appears like magic after the darkest storm. And bringing home this new baby understandably carries with it intensified emotions and anxiety (not to diminish the intensity of those feelings in every single mom that ever was). For anyone who is expecting after experiencing loss, support is out there.
