Canceling plans--and cutting yourself some serious slack--might actually make you happier, according to a recent study in the British Journal of Psychology.

Here, we’ll explain: Basically, it harkens back to the close-knit hunter-gatherer days of yore when frequent social contact with friends was not only necessary for survival but also for making babies. Fast-forward to 2016, when smarty-pants ladies everywhere are pretty damn skilled at taking advantage of modern-day conveniences (like Facebook or Match.com) to find other ways to keep up with friends and romance without adding not-so-necessary strain to their social lives.
