CBD Ice Cream Might Be a Thing Soon, if Ben & Jerry’s Has Anything to Say About It

If you thought CBD was over, think again. It might be coming to a pint (and a spoon) near you very soon.

In an Instagram post, the ice cream purveyor announced, "Trend alert! CBD-infused ice cream is (maybe, hopefully) coming to a freezer near you!" And in a statement yesterday, Ben & Jerry’s elaborated on their plight: “You probably already know that we’re fans of all things groovy […] So it’s no surprise that we can’t wait to get into the latest food trend: cannabidiol, or CBD. We are open to bringing CBD-infused ice cream to your freezer as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level.”

And that could be pretty soon, friends. The FDA—which currently bans CBD in food and beverages sold to the public—is holding a public hearing to discuss the legalization of CBD-infused foods and beverages on May 31 (aka today). Ben & Jerry’s says it’s “submitted a comment to them in support of legalization.”

ICYMI, CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the highly trendy—and maybe bogus?—non-psychoactive compound that’s found in marijuana. No, it won’t get you high, man…but some people report feeling relaxed and at ease with use. As of December 2018, CBD is legal at the federal level, but the FDA still has the final say on regulating products containing cannabis and cannabis-related extracts (and it said “no”).

As for our ice-cream boyfriends, Ben and Jerry want to use “sustainably-sourced CBD from [their] home state of Vermont,” as an effort to support the local community. No word on what the actual flavor would be—but if it’s anything like Phish Food…

According to The New York Times, there’s no set date by which the FDA will make its ruling.  Until then, we’re happy to stick to Cherry Garcia (and Chubby Hubby, and The Tonight Dough…).
