Ever been told “no?” Ever been told “no” 98 times and persisted anyway? Author Bonnie Garmus knows the feeling. Her first manuscript was repeatedly rejected by publishers. Thankfully it didn’t stop her.

This past April, Garmus debuted her first novel, Lessons in Chemistry and it’s been on the New York Times bestseller list for 65 straight weeks. It was also recently turned into a series on Apple TV+ starring Academy Award winner Brie Larson as the leading role and executive producer.

But back to Garmus: She didn’t start Lessons in Chemistry until age 64, when a bad meeting at work (where a male coworker took credit for her idea) motivated her to put pen to paper. Born in California and now living in London with her husband and two daughters (and dog named 99), Garmus said Lessons in Chemistry struck a chord around the world because readers identify with the main character. “There are so few of us who haven’t been put down, pushed aside, maligned, passed over, rejected, ripped off, lied to or treated badly simply because we’re women, people of color, gender-diverse, neuro-diverse, too fat, too thin, too short, too tall—you name it,” she told The Guardian last year. Now, Garmus has another novel on the horizon. We have a feeling it’ll be a surefire “yes” this time around.

ADVICE for the GROUP CHAT:

“Write with confidence, trust your voice—and write the story you want to read,” Garmus shared via the Better Reading blog.
