How I Chose the Best Comforter Sets

When selecting the best comforter sets, I took into account their material, size, contents, certifications and all-around style. I also looked at price as a factor. In addition, I considered each set's ratings, reviews and the quality of the brand.

Best Overall

1. Brooklinen Classic Percale Duvet Bundle

Brooklinen

It’s no secret that PureWow readers are obsessed with Brooklinen sheets—and this comforter set has just as much to love. First, the included duvet cover is made from crisp, 270-thread count long-staple cotton with a hotel-worthy percale weave. This not only makes it exceptionally soft and durable in the wash but it also has a cooling matte finish that’s ideal for hot sleepers. To that end, the set also includes a comforter with the choice of two fills (down alternative or down) and three weights: lightweight, all-season or ultra-warm. “I was impressed with the attention to detail on the duvet cover—it has ties at the corners to tie into the duvet. I also love the design and construction of [the cover]! It has a crisp feeling without feeling too thin. It also keeps me from sweating in this mild San Diego climate,” one Brooklinen reviewer backs.

2. CozyLux Seersucker Bed in a Bag

Amazon

With more than 5,400 five-star reviews on Amazon, it makes sense why people are raving over this bed in a bag. Not only does the bundle include five pieces—including a comforter, pillow sham, pillowcase, flat sheet and fitted sheet—but it also features a casual, rumpled look on the front with a smooth underside. It basically has the relaxed, messy-looking vibe of linen with the soft and supple feel of microfiber. Bonus: The deep pocket fitted sheet fits mattresses up to 16 inches deep. Take it from one Amazon reviewer who says, “I was looking for a set with a comforter that felt more like those cozy hotel quilts. Soft, not too thick, and keeps you warm without burning up. This is the PERFECT set! Cozy, comfy, soft sheets, with the perfect quilt cover!”

3. Serena & Lily Westport Beach Club Bedding Set

Serena and Lily

Made from yarn-dyed cotton, this seersucker design offers a quality, puckered texture that you could only find at a five-star B&B. While the duvet has a hand-embroidered trim for contrast, it also includes a fabric-covered button closure with inner ties to keep the insert in place. (The insert also features 600-fill power and a medium weight that makes it perfect for normal to warm environments). Beyond that, you also have the option to add two Westport Euro shams with inserts, featuring a 100 percent PrimaLoft Fiberfill and hypoallergenic, ultra-thin fibers that create a down-like feel. But the real kicker is that the set comes with an entire Beach Club sheet set, which has a 310 thread count of smooth, combed cotton percale. Is it a splurge? Yes. But is everything in this set also guaranteed to last a decade (without going out of style)? You betcha.

Fast Facts

  • Size: 7-pieces (9 pieces with inserts)
  • What's Included: 1 duvet, 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 standard pillowcases, 2 Euro shams (option to add duvet + sham inserts)
  • Material: yarn-dyed cotton duvet, combed cotton percale, PrimaLoft Fiberfill

Sticking with the luxury theme: With natural softness and a breathable midweight density, this hotel-worthy set has more to offer than just good looks (though, the soft sheen and refined trim are investment-worthy on their own). Each comforter is uniquely designed with a protective inner lining that surrounds a hypoallergenic, recycled polyester fill (with invisible quilt stitching to keep the fill in place). Yet, what makes it stand out is that the comforter and the two included shams are crafted from fine organic cotton—and the softness is further enhanced by a special enzyme wash. “I absolutely love my new comforter set. Everything about it exceeded my expectations: it’s so soft, durable and cozy, and the color is perfect—exactly as it appeared online,” one Boll & Branch reviewer writes.

With a modern, monochromatic aesthetic and 200-thread count cotton percale, this garment-washed set offers a luxuriously relaxed feel. It includes a comforter and two shams—all fit with a knife-edge finish for a tailored look—and features a medium warmth level, thanks to a lightweight polyester fill. “I wanted a comforter that would have the look of a lot of fluff yet not be too hot for sleeping, and I've found it! My bed looks like something out of a department store with this comforter and shams,” one Macy’s reviewer raves. To that end, another shopper adds: “It’s the perfect comforter for spring/summer. It almost has a cooling feel—you won’t feel overheated.” The best part? It’s machine-washable and said to get softer over time.

Made of a soft-yet-heavyweight linen-blend, this comforter set by Casaluna was constructed for all-year use. It comes with two shams equipped with side zippers, which means you won't have to constantly be adjusting the covers. It's OEKO-TEX-certified, too so you'll sleep safe and sound. The one downside? It can be a pain to clean, since it wrinkles pretty heavily in the washer and physically melts in the dryer, according to Target shoppers—you'll definitely want to line-dry this baby: “This comforter is SO cozy. It lays heavy on top of me and wraps me up at night…washing should improve the softness of the linen. You also should never put linen in the dryer. If you must, do it on the lowest setting (will take several hours to dry). I did all this and had no tears, ripping, pilling, fuzzy balls, no issues at all, whatsoever.”

Best Bamboo

7. Quince Bamboo Quilt Set

Quince

Made from 100 percent organic bamboo, this mid-weight quilt is incredibly soft with a silky-smooth sateen weave. And ICYMI, bamboo is one of the most naturally temperature-regulating materials—so this three-piece set is sure to help hot sleepers keep night sweats at bay. “My partner and I both sleep hot and this quilt is not only gorgeous, but it also feels silky and luxe. It’s thin enough to keep you cool while also feeling cool to the touch. The weight is perfect because it is just enough to make you feel comforted and cozy, without making you feel claustrophobic or sweaty,” one Quince reviewer writes. They also add: “This thing FEELS like luxury! It also looks gorgeous on the bed and compliments the room. Definitely a fancy hotel vibe.” The cherry on top? It comes in 10 trendy colors that can fit any aesthetic.

This ultra-plush faux fur comforter will keep even the chilliest of sleepers cozy throughout the night. Two pillow shams come with the bedding topper, which is filled with polyester and has a faux micro-mink backing. The comforter is also beautifully box quilted with a plush polyester-sherpa microfleece (and it just so happens to be reversible/washable).  “A friend loaned me this comforter because I was complaining over how cold I was sleeping on an air mattress. I slept on top of my blankets and used this UGG comforter to sleep under…What a difference!! It’s so warm and soft I was reluctant to return it to her,” one Amazon reviewer writes. Buyers also love the feel of it, with one writing, "Great quality and beautiful! Very soft and comfortable. Very happy about this purchase."

This super fluffy seven-piece comforter ensemble includes everything you need:  a comforter, two shams, three accent pillows and a bed skirt. As for the comforter, it features 95 GSM (grams per square meter) of brushed microfiber polyester fabric with a lightweight, 220 GSM fill for year-round use. (That level of feel is particularly good for hot sleepers, though people who run cold may want an extra blanket on top in the winter.) Beyond that, the classic pin-tuck pinch pleat on the matching accent pillows offers a touch of elegance with raised ridges that bring subtle yet eye-catching dimension. “We've had this comforter for a few months now and are very happy,” one Wayfair reviewer writes. “It feels like you're sleeping under a cloud. It's soft and lightweight, yet warm. It also holds up well in the washing machine and dryer.”

I love this floral-textured cotton comforter set for its unique design and neutral hues to match any decor. Its pattern has a hint of French country flair, including a solid color adorned with elegant petals and leaves in a soft, raised chenille. But what also makes it great is that it's both machine washable and dryable, and the polyester filling is hypoallergenic for those with sensitive skin. It's on the heavier side, however, so note that it may be a better choice for fall than summer. “It is beautiful, yet so simple. The tufted floral pattern is very eye-pleasing on its own—and the white on grey gives a nice contrast…Once I fluffed it up, I noticed it had a nice weight to it. The comforter itself is warm and great for winter as it has a hypoallergenic filling,” writes one Wayfair reviewer.

Add to that the fact that the pre-washed microfiber cover offers exceptional softness—all while the included sham covers are built to resist pilling and shrinking in the wash. One Amazon reviewer says, “I've owned both down and alternative down comforters for years. This is incredibly soft and lightweight when you're snuggled under it—perfect for springtime here in California.” Bonus: It comes with a cushy accent pillow to match.

If this elegant toile pattern doesn't make you swoon, I don't know what will. It comes with a full set-up—you'll get a comforter and two pillow shams—so you’ll have everything you need to properly binge-watch your shows in bed. It’s also made with a durable 100 percent cotton and mid-weight polyfill that’s great for all-season use: “We live in New England, so our weather goes from one extreme to the other…This set is very soft, is plump enough for hot summer nights…plus crisp fall nights when temps start to dip to the high 40’s. The muted blue colors are also gorgeous, and it’s large enough to give ample draping on both sides of a King-sized bed,” one Wayfair reviewer reports.

If you're having difficulty nailing down the exact pattern and color combination you want for your bedroom, this all-encompassing reversible collection will make your decision a whole lot easier. One side features a bold hand-drawn quatrefoil pattern while the other is a brighter white with colored detailing. Made of 100 percent microfiber polyester, this set is prone to keep its plushness, too—even after a number of washes. Best Chenille

14. Peri Home Chenille Comforter Set

Walmart

For those who would rather feel smooth, cooling cotton on their skin as they sleep, there's this option from Peri Home. The simple-yet-chic design is made from 100 percent cotton with a fuzzy, chenille lattice element that adds a playful texture to your bedding. "Soft," "warm," "beautiful" and "comfortable" were adjectives used to describe it by reviewers, but note that it doesn't wash as well as it's advertised and may need special care, as the fuzzy bits tend to spread out across the comforter.

  • Size: 3-pieces
  • What's Included: 1 comforter, 2 standard shams
  • Material: 100 percent cotton chenille

Best Ruffled

15. Willa Arlo Apollo Comforter Set

Wayfair

Made with sumptuous microfiber and 230 GSM of polyfill, this shabby chic comforter set will be sure to make a spring statement. In fact, Wayfair reviewers love the neutral, ruffle-hem detailing that can easily blend in with any bedroom: "Beautiful set! It looks very clean and classy and the neutrality of it allows you to mix and match patterns and colors for your throw pillows." The comforter comes with shams to match, and it's beyond soft, if its buyers are to be believed.

What to Look for in a Comforter Set

Material: There are a wide variety of comforter fabrics out there, so before you find your perfect set, you'll want to familiarize yourself with some of the materials that go into them. Organic cotton-based fabrics breathe easily, for instance, but have the possibility of shrinking a little in the wash, whereas polyester microfibers are hypoallergenic and tend to retain their plushiness. Read on to learn more about some of the most common comforter materials.

  • Bamboo: This silky, breathable material is ideal for hot sleepers and couples alike, due to its woven construction, which allows air to easily pass through. It's soft to the touch and tends to be eco-friendly, as bamboo is a highly renewable source.
  • Linen: Linen is made from the stalks of the flax plant, making it an all-natural fiber that’s ideal for warm weather, since linen is also naturally cooling, hypoallergenic and gets softer with each wash.
  • Cotton: Cotton has many advantages when it comes to bedding: Its breathable nature helps to keep the body cool at night, as it is excellent at absorbing moisture such as sweat (it can reportedly soak up to 27 times its weight). The best part about cotton is that it actually becomes softer over time, so you can use it to your heart's desire. However, because of its popularity, it often runs cheap, so make sure you're investing in a high-quality set that’s not too scratchy.
  • Polyester: This durable and lightweight fabric will be ideal for chillier nights, as it has heat-trapping properties. It also maintains its shape without wrinkling, and you can toss it in the washer and dryer with ease. However, keep in mind that it can cause irritation to those with sensitive skin.
  • Microfiber: Typically made of synthetic materials, this fabric is more resistant to wrinkling and shrinkage. Microfiber manages to be thin, yet strong. It can also wick away moisture, keeping you dry all night. It can easily trap heat, however, so it may be best suited for cold sleepers or chilly nights. Physically, microfiber tends to be smooth to the touch and gives off a polished appearance.

Certifications: When searching for a new comforter set, keep an eye out for an OEKO-TEX certification. This stamp of approval means the item meets safety and environmental requirements as set by the International Association for Research and Testing (IRCT) in the field of textile and leather ecology, like being free of harmful substances and following environmentally responsible production standards.

What Comes in a Comforter Set

In addition to the material and certification, you'll also want to make sure that your new comforter set comes with everything you need to complete your bedding. A basic three-piece set, for instance, may include a comforter and two pillow shams, while larger ones will include your fitted and flat sheets, bed skirts and bonuses, such as decorative pillows. In case you need a quick refresher on what different parts of a set are called, here are some basic bedding elements that will be good to keep in mind while browsing.

  • Shams: There are several types of shams, which are essentially decorative pillowcases. A Euro sham is designed to fit over a square-shaped Euro pillow, while a standard sham is designed to fit over a standard-sized pillow.
  • Bed skirt: A bed skirt is designed to be placed underneath your mattress and draped around the entire bed to conceal the space underneath.
  • Duvet: A duvet, not to be confused with a duvet cover, is a fabric bag that's filled with plush material, such as down feathers or down alternatives, that takes the place of a blanket or comforter. It’s usually thicker than a traditional comforter and often protected and/or decorated with a removable duvet cover.
  • Coverlet: A coverlet is a thin layer of bedding that's meant to provide additional warmth or decoration to your normal comforter. It typically boasts an intricate woven design.
  • Fitted sheet: A fitted sheet is the sheet that fits snugly around your mattress.
  • Flat sheet: A flat sheet is placed over the fitted sheet and under the comforter (if one is used).
