’40s fashion with modern sensibility
Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth, Casablanca: We love 1940s glamour. This said, we've traditionally been wary of mimicking the style, lest we end up looking like a Dick Tracy character. Luckily, this season we're seeing tons of subtle, sophisticated ways to channel the era.
For starters, it's all about the dress, which comes bold-shouldered, silky and elegantly printed, like this fresh-off-the-runway Miu Miu number ($5,325). At a lower price point, we're digging Rebecca Taylor's cutout creation ($425) or Anthropologie's flirty shirtdress ($178). Go full-on noir with a tighter, pencil-skirted version ($690).
As for shoes, we like simple, elegant Mary Janes ($198) as well as more playful interpretations like these blue, scalloped Manolos ($775) and this Chinese-inspired pair ($388), which we'd wear with wool or patterned tights. For a more casual look, try a stacked saddle shoe ($60).
And whatever you do: Don't forget the sultry red manicure.
