“If you’re rushing to yoga class, you’re doing it wrong,” comedian Zarna Garg quips during her new Amazon Prime stand-up special to an uproar of laughter from the audience. An Indian-American former lawyer and stay-at-home mom turned stand-up comedian and screenwriter, Garg is never in a hurry—because she’s already arrived.

Rewind to her teenage years in Mumbai, India: Garg’s mother passed away suddenly and she was set to enter an arranged marriage. After immigrating to the U.S. and living with her sister and sister’s family, Garg attended American college and law school. However, Garg discovered a new calling and after a career, three children and 16 years as a stay-at-home mom, she took up comedy. “I couldn’t recall any female Indian comedians who had jokes that reflected everyday Indian and American life,” she wrote on her website.

During the pandemic, Garg found success telling clean jokes about being an immigrant and mother on TikTok and in the first three weeks of posting, she received 3 million views. In addition to her Prime special, One in a Billion, and a stand-up tour, Variety named her to the prestigious "comics to watch for 2023" list. She also has a new podcast out this month, The Zarna Garg Show.

ADVICE for the GROUP CHAT:

“Did you know that you can add years to your life by living far away from your MIL (mother-in-law)?” Garg told us. Fascinating.
