How to Make Instant Coffee Actually Taste Good

Because when you need a cup, you need a cup

As much as we’d love a piping hot cup of organic, fair-trade coffee every time we need a caffeine fix, the reality is that most of us don’t have in-home baristas. Meaning that sometimes we have to lower our standards a little, even turning to instant coffee from time to time. And while it’s certainly never going to be the greatest joe we’ll ever have, you can bet we’re going to make it as satisfying as possible. Here’s how:

What you need: Instant coffee (a good kind, like Starbucks Via or Bustelo Supreme), a mug and hot and cold water.

What you do: Pour 1 tablespoon of cold water into your mug, then add the coffee grounds and stir until fully incorporated. Fill it to the top with hot water, stir again and enjoy.

Why it works: When you dissolve instant coffee directly into hot water, the amylum contained in the granules hardens, creating a powdery taste and consistency. By mixing the granules with cold water first, they dissolve more gently once introduced to hot water.

The taste is so close to the real deal, you may never brew a pot of coffee again.
