Remember when hygge, the Danish concept of coziness (and sweets and fireplaces and cozy socks), was everywhere late last year? Well, there’s a new sheriff in town, and by sheriff, we mean Scandinavian wellness trend.
It’s called lagom, and it’s pretty great.
What is it? Like hygge, lagom (pronounced lah-gohm) is fairly hard to define in a sentence. But basically, it’s the Swedish art of living a balanced and happy life. It boils down to “not too much, not too little.”
How can I apply it to my life? Practice moderation. De-clutter your home. Take proper lunch breaks (no more chomping an energy bar while answering emails). Live sustainably. Generally, enjoy life but don’t overindulge. And if you’re still stuck, preorder this book, Lagom: Not Too Little, Not Too Much: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life by Niki Brantmark. It gives background on the philosophy behind lagom and teaches you how to include its principles in your daily life.
So no, lagom isn’t all candles, self-care and reading Danish crime novels (like hygge), but a happy and balanced existence sounds pretty damn lovely to us.
