The 10 Best Local Workout Studios with Live Stream & On-Demand Classes

The New Year usually brings resolutions about kickstarting a steady fitness routine, and now it’s more important than ever to stay healthy and fit to keep our immune systems strong. Thankfully, our favorite local studios and instructors have moved their classes online with a mix of livestream and on-demand classes. No fancy equipment—just a mat and a good WiFi signal. If you’re finding it hard to get motivated at home (yes, the couch and cookies keep calling us too), just remember that we need to do our part to keep our favorite local studios afloat so that they’re able to reopen once this pandemic is finally behind us. That’s why we’ve rounded up 10 of SF’s most beloved spots that are offering virtual sessions to get Zen, break a sweat and strengthen our core. Staying in shape and supporting our favorite workout studios—now that’s a power combo we can get behind.

1. Mnt Studios

We’re counting down the days until we can finally go back to this gorgeous studio in person, but for now, founder Elaine Hayes has moved MNT’s classes online. Choose from all the usual suspects—barre, mat pilates, pilates bootcamp and even reformer classes—all live streamed via Zoom (drop-ins range from $10 to $25). Or work out on your own time with the MNT Online site or app, a library of 40-plus on-demand classes ($20/month). Bonus: To keep your routine fresh, they drop in a new workout every Monday morning.

2. Yoga Garden

A true sanctuary (and one that we definitely don’t want to lose!), Yoga Garden is the closest we’ve found to a perfect Zen retreat in the city. They’re offering both livestream workouts ($15/class) and unlimited on-demand classes ($65/month) ranging from hatha to vinyasa to yoga sculpt and power flow. The best way to wrap up a long week? Sign up for a slow, quiet yin yoga session that will release you gently into the weekend.

3. Burn

For the record, this is our absolute favorite workout ever. (How could you not adore a studio that had a trampoline class?!?) Sadly, all of Burn’s Bay Area locations are a casualty of the pandemic, but founder Lisa Corsello has moved her trademark combo of cardio, weight training and amped-up pilates online. She now offers a daily schedule of livestream classes ($15/class), plus an extensive library of on-demand videos ($30/month) so you can feel the Burn anywhere, any day, any time.

4. Maiden Lane Studios

We definitely want this posh studio in the heart of Union Square to stick around, so we’re thrilled that they’re offering both live stream ($12/class) and on-demand ($80/month) options—from mat pilates to two different types of barre. And at Maiden Lane Studios, you’ll also be supporting a very important local nonprofit—10 percent of proceeds are donated to the SF Marin Food Bank.

5. Uforia Studios

If a good playlist is a must-have when you work out, then sign up for a signature GRIT class at this women-owned studio, where you’ll sweat from a combo of high-intensity strength and cardio. Dance your thing? They’ve got pop and hip hop sessions too. Uforia is offering both livestream workouts ($7/class) and an on-demand library ($20/month) to fit your schedule.

The Pad Studios/Facebook

6. The Pad Studios

We love The Pad Studios for its yoga and pilates classes. Vinyasa is the only yoga currently being live streamed ($16/class), but theme, intensity and pace will vary by teacher. Plus, there’s classic mat pilates good for all levels. If you can’t make it live, choose from a variety of classes available on-demand ($18/month).

7. Core40

Core40’s butt-kicking cardio and strength training workouts have a cult following here in the Bay Area, and they’re currently offering their lagree-style classes, minus the megaformer, virtually via both livestream sessions and an on-demand library of options (all $20/class). We’re especially loving the intense 30-minute workout followed by a 10-minute meditation—the perfect bite-sized way to stay fit and calm.

8. Mighty Pilates

With a wide variety of livestream classes, you can now enjoy a Mighty Pilates session from either the SF or LA studio. Sign up for traditional mat pilates, Tighten N Tone (TnT) cardio, pilates with a booty & core focus or a lower key, restorative Stretch & Lengthen class (all $14/class; 5-pack for $59). And since class sizes are limited to 20 people max, you’ll still benefit from more personalized instruction. No props are required, but we recommend grabbing a couple of wine bottles as hand weights for Pilates + Wine Wednesdays, which includes an end-of-class toast. If you’re looking for 1-on-1 time, book a private session and meet your instructor on Zoom, Skype or FaceTime.

9. Yoga Flow

We love each of Yoga Flow’s three unique SF studios, each offering their own sense of tranquility. Now, each studio hosts a different schedule of livestream classes—from an all-levels flow to vinyasa. Right now they even have a new student special ($25 for 7 days of unlimited sessions).

10. Karma Yoga

If you’re familiar with this Cow Hollow studio, you know it’s best for those of us who like it hot. And while you won’t get the 95-degree studio experience at home, you can still crank up your heater for a live stream or on-demand Hot HIIT Flow, Power Yoga or Karmic Flow (a very sweaty combo of Hot HIIT and Power Yoga). For $24 a month, you’ll get unlimited access to live streams and on-demand classes…and you’ll be insanely in shape.
