Since we were little we?ve believed that flossing is an unskippable step in our daily routine. Coupled with brushing, it helps prevent gum disease and cavities, right?
Maybe?According to the Associated Press, the medical benefits of flossing are actually largely unproven.
The thing is, the federal government?s Dietary Guidelines for Americans has recommended flossing since 1979. Under the law, the guidelines have to be based on scientific evidence. This year, flossing disappeared from the list without warning. Turns out, in a letter to the AP, the government acknowledged that the effectiveness of flossing had never been researched, as required. What?!
Flossing hasn?t been proven to have adverse side effects either, so if you want to keep up your routine, go for it. But if you haven?t been so diligent, this should definitely make you feel better.
