The City Is Ruining Your Skin, but Here’s How to Fix It
Hint: It involves avocados
New York City, we love you. But there’s something we have to talk about: our skin. Why do you clog our pores, puff up our eyes and make our chins break out?
Welp, we want to work this out. So we got some advice from VMV Hypoallergenics esthetician (aka skin guru), Adrienne Ortiz, to help save our relationship. Here’s her skin advice.
Let’s face it--the air quality in NYC sucks. There are particles of heating oil, sulfur, nickel, car exhaust and all sorts of other junk wafting through the air, and they settle on your skin whenever you go outside. Gross, right?
The fix: Use a light exfoliant that contains natural pumice grains (like Alba Botanica's Sea Algae Enzyme Scrub) once a week to slough off dead skin cells and dissolve dirt.
Even if getting an actual night’s sleep isn’t in the cards, you still need to remove your makeup and wash your face every single night, no exceptions. Working long hours (or just partying) in your makeup can clog pores and cause breakouts.
The fix: Try a week-long skin fast to rejuvenate your depleted skin. At least once a year, ditch your makeup and cleansing products and wash and moisturize your face with extra-virgin coconut oil instead. Trust us, you can do this--it’s not like we asked you to give up chocolate.
Sooo you’ve ordered takeout seven times this week. (Lightweight.) Restaurant food is packed with salt, so there’s no wonder you’re waking up with puffy cheeks and bags under your eyes every morning.
The fix: Swap out one restaurant meal a day with a green juice. The chlorophyll in dark green veggies oxygenates your skin--plus, you’ll eliminate all of the sodium in that bacon-egg-and-cheese you usually grab.
We hate to break it to you, but every alcoholic drink you consume is drying out your skin (yep, even wine). Chances are, this is why your foundation is going on all patchy, especially around the eyes and mouth.
The fix: Aim to drink a gallon of water a day (that’s five 25-ounce Swell bottles). In two weeks, your skin will be soft and dewy, even after a cocktail or two.
Every once in a while, you’ve just gotta hang out on the couch, watch Say Anything… and eat a few too many handfuls of salty microwave popcorn. We just wish it didn’t have to come with the puffy eyes, chapped lips and dry skin.
The fix: Treat yourself to a weekly avocado mask to restore moisture. Just mash up half of a ripe avocado in a bowl and apply it to your face and lips for 15 to 30 minutes. (And if you're too lazy to go to the store and buy a real avocado, Origins' Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask will also do the trick.)
You’re sweating out toxins, which is great for your skin, right? In theory--but when you wait for the G train for 30 minutes in your sweaty gym clothes, fungus grows on your skin, creating a breeding ground for breakouts.
The fix: Apply monolaurin gel (like this one from VMV Hypoallergenics) to your face, neck, chest and back after your workout. Bye, fungus, viruses and yeast (ew).
