Avocados are one of our favorite snacks. So imagine our surprise when we found out that we’re apparently tossing the most nutritious part.
Yep, we’re talking about the pit. Indeed, the little guy is packed with enough nutrients (like vitamin E, fiber and plant sterols) to lower your cholesterol, treat high blood pressure and reduce inflammatory conditions like hypertension and diabetes, according to researchers at Penn State.
But that’s not all: Dieticians say that consuming small quantities of that teeny-tiny seed can also help protect against sun damage, boost the health of your hair and nails and fight “bad” bacteria and inflammation in your gut.
The tricky part, of course, is figuring out how to eat it. The best way is to toss it in a high-powered blender or your Vitamix and puree until it basically becomes a powder. (If your blender sucks, cut the pit into quarters before you puree.) Add it to your smoothie and serve.
