5 Reasons to Join a Gym (and No, Not to Work Out)
Squats can wait--we’re steaming
No argument here: Working out is great for you. But so is dipping into a eucalyptus-scented cloud--or having your laundry professionally done-- every now and then. These Chicago gyms offer amenities that almost outweigh the group classes. Indeed, membership has its perks.
Order a Drink: HiFi Fitness
At the River North trainer gym, workouts are taken seriously--but so are snacks. (Hallelujah.) The owners of the fitness studio just opened an on-site juice bar for clients. It serves smoothies, juices (try the carrot-orange-ginger), and coffee; there are also healthy snacks.
Laundry Service: The Buckingham Club
The under-the-radar fitness facility treats its members well. Yes, there’s a pristine lap pool and top-notch classes (try the upbeat “Werq”), but it’s the amenities that are elevating our heart rates. You’ll get a personal locker with laundry service. There’s also a shoeshine, if you’re so inclined. Oh, and steam rooms and saunas, too.

Find Peace and Quiet: Exhale
Exhale’s Core Fusion Extreme class revs up your metabolism big time. And its Core Fusion Barre Classes make grown women shake like leaves. But if you want a little moment of Zen, the boutique fitness studio offers that as well. At the Gold Coast Location, a quiet lounge in back is filled with heated neck pillows, plush furniture covered in furry throws and stacks of magazines. Kick back, grab a cup of Detox tea and get your bliss on.

Sweat it Out: Equinox
Yep, sweating it out sounds dangerously close to a workout. But for the days when you just can’t motivate to lace up those Nikes, Equinox has a eucalyptus steam room. Step in, crank up the heat and feel stress dissolving into a fragrant cloud. Ahhh.
Fake a Tan: Fitness Formula Club
Let’s face it: it’s still winter. (Snow? We’re not buying this springtime thing.) Convince your complexion otherwise at FFC, where the Ortanic studio offers UV-free airbrush tanning. And if that’s not your thing, the on-site spa offers hot stone massages. So you can pretend you’re somewhere warm.
