6 of The Best Warm Weekend Getaways
What are long-weekends for if not getting the hell out of Dodge in search of sunshine and higher temps? To help you plan a quick escape, here are seven awesome warm weekend getaways perfect for a three-day excursion.
Most U.S. cities offer relatively affordable and easy flights to the luxurious Caribbean Island of Antigua (it’s a straight four-hour shot from NYC). With gorgeous resorts, and 365 amazing beaches, there’s really nowhere better to relax and soak up the sun.
Where to stay: For a totally luxe experience, check out Jumby Bay Island, a private islet two miles off the northeast coast of Antigua. Each cottage offers a private courtyard, a wraparound terrace and an outdoor shower, not to mention easy access to a totally uncrowded white sand beach.
2. Puerto Rico
Don’t mistake Puerto Rico for a rowdy spring break destination. San Juan happens to be a terribly sophisticated city with great restaurants, design shops, boutique hotels and, of course, white sand galore. Our pick is Luquillo beach, a calm and protected lagoon just 30 minutes from town. Plus, since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, traveling is simple…and you won’t even need a passport.
Where to stay: A stay at the Condado Vanderbilt hotel in San Juan is worth it for the infinity pool alone. But the ocean views, in-room French press coffee makers and Spanish Revival-style architecture are the toppings on the cake.
3. Austin, Texas
It’s not a beach vacation, but river tubing around the city with your closest pals is a pretty sweet way to spend an afternoon. Other reasons to go? Try the excellent music scene and outstanding food, which ranges from mouthwateringly good barbecue (duh) and tacos to fresh takes on traditional ramen and pizza.
Where to stay: The stylish Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt is centrally-located near happening Rainey Street and boasts a spacious pool as well as the trendy Geradline's restaurant that hosts live music most nights. But our favorite perk? The daily complimentary wine, beer and margarita hour in the hotel lobby.
4. Palm Springs
Head to this oasis in the middle of the SoCal dessert, once a famous Rat Pack hangout. Don't miss a half-day hike in Mount San Jacinto or Joshua Tree National Park.
Where to stay: A stay at the Parker Hotel means nothing more than relaxing by the pool, surrounded by manicured gardens, mountains and dessert.
Located just off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda is only a several-hour flight from most East Coast cities. Go for great deep-sea fishing, breathtaking snorkeling and picture-perfect beaches.
Where to stay: All cottages, rooms and suites at Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa on the western side of the island boast their own private terrace or patio. It's the ideal spot to sit back and relax with views of beautiful Mangrove Bay and a Rum Swizzle (or two).
6. Hilton Head, South Carolina
There's plenty to keep you entertained in this charming beach town including golf, horseback riding and biking. In the mood for some retail therapy? Check out Harbour Town's cute shops or the artisan offerings in Bluffton (there's also a mega outlet store complex nearby). Or you could spend the entire weekend sampling some of the area's great cuisine and drinks. Pro tip: Start with a guided distillery tour of several of Hilton Head Distillery’s craft rums, vodkas, and whiskeys followed by soul food and live music at Ruby Lee’s.
Where to Stay: This unique villa us surrounded by gorgeous parks, nature and wildlife on the heel of the island. Best part? This sunny retreat that is closer to water than any other resort on the island.
Hello, vibrant food scene, gorgeous weather and art that could rival any European city. When you’re done soaking up the sun in South Beach, head to the Wynwood neighborhood for awesome street art, museums and design shops. While you’re there, try the best cubano sandwich at Enriqueta’s. You'll swear you've died and gone to Havana.
Where to stay: The Loews Miami Beach Hotel in South Beach has just had a massive $50 million renovation that includes fabulous new restaurants and a chic pool deck. If you manage to tear yourself away from your sweet digs, the beach is just steps away along with all the bars and restaurants on Ocean Drive.
