You Can Sleep in an Oversize, Luxury Barrel While You Sip Your Way Through Tequila, Mexico

If Tequila, Mexico—the town at the center of tequila production since the 16th century—is not on your travel radar yet, there’s officially a whole new reason to consider the destination: the unique opportunity to sleep in a barrel. Keep reading.

Similar to the barrels used to age tequila—but at a much larger scale—the sleeping quarters at Matices Hotel de Barricas are not the only thing unique to the locale. Situated in the Mexican state of Jalisco and just a short drive from the bustling city of Guadalajara, you can think of Tequila Valley like wine country for the devil’s drink. You’ll find expansive, picturesque landscapes full of agave plants (the stuff that tequila’s made of) right from the front porch of your barrel room. You’ll also be parked at the outskirts of the charming town, which is close enough to enjoy the fun bars and yummy grub of downtown while never getting too far from the natural beautiful landscape.

When you’re ready for a little respite, each barrel room at Matices Hotel de Barricas has comfortable digs, including king beds, a mural wall, a large rain shower and oversize windows to let in that gorgeous Tequila Valley sunlight. A snack bar that also serves cocktails and beer, along with a restaurant, is just a few steps away, perched next to a gorgeous Parota tree. But the best part? It’s all located within walking distance of Casa Noble, one of Tequila’s most celebrated premium distilleries and tasting rooms known for their certified organic and sustainability practices.

During your visit, you might catch one of Casa Noble’s jimadors during an agave harvesting—a unique process where agave plants are dug out before making their way into the production facility—but even if you don’t, something tells us you’ll be saying “arriba, abajo, al centro, adentro” in no time. That’s because Casa Noble has one of the most beautiful estates and tasting rooms where you and your crew can spend a full day just sipping on their delicious blanco, reposado and anejo blends. Reservations for tastings can be made by e-mailing hospitality@casanoble.com.
