OK, you made it through the holidays, but now there’s nothing but chilly wintertime ennui to look forward to. That is, unless you schedule a trip to Catalina Island’s newly prettified spa for a massage that truly feels like an escape.
Island Spa Catalina is the just-completed jewel in the planned $40 million revitalization of the sleepy island, an hour’s yacht ride west from San Pedro. The spa, located in a historic tile-roofed building in the center of little Avalon town, has nine treatment rooms and an outdoor deck with ocean views, a dry sauna and a eucalyptus-scented steam room.
Here’s your plan: Catch the 9 a.m. Catalina Express boat service to Avalon, then treat yourself to one of the special eggs Benedicts (Dungeness crab or turkey and avocado) at Original Jack’s Country Kitchen. Take a ten-minute stroll over to the spa around noon, then hang out in the saunas and soaking pool until your appointment--maybe a lavender facial, massage and coconut-lime-sugarcane body scrub combo ($135). Or, if you’re the tough-love type, have someone walk on your back ($90).
Finally, relax with a cup of hot tea until you catch your charter back to the mainland at 5:15 p.m. No one even needs to know you visited your own little coastal Cali happy place.
