These days, we’ve come to expect that big sounds come from small packages. So how does the newest player in the portable speaker game, the Megaboom from Ultimate Ears ($300), hold up?
First, major points for presentation. The speaker is nestled in a protective carrying case with niftily hidden handles. And the device itself, which is about the size of a wine bottle, comes in four colors. Plus the exterior is a waterproof skin, so if you’re the beach-going or tailgating type, it’ll probably save your party more than once.
But how does it sound, you ask? Well, good. Clear and bright, and loud for its size. We played “All About that Bass” on the Megaboom and a tried-and-true competitor that retails at the same price, the Bose SoundLink III, and the newcomer held its own--though the Bose is still more about that bass.
That’s okay. Treble’s underrated.
