Whitney Casey

The Former CNN Anchor Turned Tech Entrepreneur

Whitney Casey will be the first to tell you she’s got a lot to learn. That humility has no doubt helped drive her success, first as a CNN anchor and now as the co-founder of Finery, an app that lets you catalog and organize your wardrobe. It’s also made her a fierce (she’s not afraid to drop an f-bomb) champion for women.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“I still ask myself that every day I wake up. I’ve had so many different careers in my life that I’ve realized you can change courses at any time. Go get what you is long AF, so you can be many things at many different stages in your life.”

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

“Less than 10 percent of patents list a woman as the ‘primary inventor,’ and less than 3 percent of venture funding goes to women founders. It seems insane that after being an Emmy Award-winning journalist and best-selling author that I would consider joining the ranks of those tiny percentages. Women are doing amazing things on the reg’ that they never get the full credit for. I can’t wait for these women to finally blow up those tiny little percentages.”

What’s something you’d like people to know about you or your job that they probably don’t?

“A few years ago I learned how to DJ (like actually attended DJ school and got a degree!). My professional DJ name is ‘DJ Half-Whit.’ I can bust out a mean wormhole effect.”

What are you most grateful for?

“Being underestimated.”

What advice do you have for other women workings toward their own dreams?

“When you start a new big project, life change or new company people will tell you that having strong passion for what you are doing is important. But when sh*t goes south and the proverbial house is on fire, in startup world, you better not be talking about ‘passion this’ or ‘passion that.’ You better have a full obsession for what you are doing. It is the only way you will be able to persevere. You have to be obsessed with your mission.”
