The Netflix Host Helping Us Not Take Things Too Seriously

Nicole Byer is the hilarious host of Netflix’s fail-friendly cooking show Nailed It!, which gives rookie bakers complex, internet-beloved assignments like emoji cupcakes, while Byer evaluates their flailing attempts to re-create them. Byer also moonlights as a slightly more R-rated stand-up comedian and is the voice behind the podcast series Why Won’t You Date Me? Fair warning: She has zero filter.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“In high school. I was in a play my sophomore year, and there were so many kids in the theater program that instead of doing a play with like eight characters they did a performance that was a collection of comedic shorts by Christopher Durang. During the show I got those first laughs from an audience...and that was it. I wanted to make people laugh, and perform forever. After that I was a full-on drama nerd—I read plays and saw plays, I was consumed.”

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

“That I haven’t given up? I don’t know, talk to me in 40 years and I’ll have a real answer.”

What’s something you’d like people to know about you/your job that they probably don’t?

“Uh-oh. I’m pretty open and honest in my comedy so I don’t really have any secrets. However about my job...I guess maybe that comedy is hard? And if you’ve never been to a comedy show a comic doesn’t need you to participate unless EXPLICITLY asked.”

What are you most grateful for?

“My friends, my therapist and La Croix.”

What advice do you have for other women working toward their own dreams?

“Just do it? When one door closes another one will open. The worst thing a person can say is no, also not everyone will say no. When you fail—because you will—just keep going.”

Snack food you can’t live without?

“Is pizza a snack? I’ll say pizza.”

Habit that has changed your life?

“Remembering to take my ADD’s why I remembered to answer the email with these questions in it.”
