Maya Wasowicz

The US National Karate Athlete Vying for the 2020 Olympics

Karate is finally going to be recognized as an Olympic sport in 2020, and Maya Wasowicz could not be more excited. A lifelong athlete, she played soccer and tennis and ran track as a kid, but she picked up karate in her early teens and never looked back. A black-belted member of the USA Karate national team, Wasowicz has a bronze medal from the 2016 WKF World Championships in Linz, Austria, and hopes to add more medals to her neck very soon.

“Everything that I’ve learned in karate translates directly into my life. The way I carry myself, staying calm in intense situations. I wouldn’t be the same person if I didn’t do karate.”
—Maya Wasowicz
