The Former J.Crew Designer Dubbed ‘Instagram’s Favorite Illustrator’

If you don’t know, now you know: Julie Houts is worth the follow. The former J.Crew womenswear designer recently shifted to full-time illustrating, and honestly, *bless* because it just means more of her hilarious commentary. Houts also recently published a book, Literally Me, that’s chock-full of her too-real illustrations about the absurd and sometimes dark realities of being a woman in her 30s.

When did you realize what you wanted to do in your life?

“I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer after enrolling in art school for painting. After working as a fashion designer for about eight years, I began working as an illustrator full-time just last May.”

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

“I published a book last October of illustrations and writing called Literally Me. I never thought I would have the opportunity or ability to do that!”

What’s something you’d like people to know about you or your job that they probably don’t?

“Working freelance is great in that it allows me to make my own schedule, but it also allows for a lot of anxiety, too.”

What does being a woman mean to you today?

“Having to answer this question a lot.”
